Yellow Food Colouring (Tartrazine) Powder is a strong yellow colour. Lake colouring means that the dye won't transfer onto skin, clothes and other materials. This product’s certificate of analysis is available on request.
Tartrazine was one of the most widely used colouring agents available on the market until some evidence was discovered that it may cause hyperactivity in children and increase the chance of children developing ADHD. This study however had preservatives mixed with the colouring agents and the increase in hyperactivity could have been due to the preservatives, rather than the colouring agents themselves.
Other studies have also shown that the general population can't distinguish between children who have been given large amounts of sugary sweets and children who have had a healthy meal, as both give children large amounts of energy; which makes them seem hyperactive. As Yellow Food Colouring is used in high sugar sweets, the hyperactivity that is apparently caused by the colouring agents could just be caused by elevated blood sugar levels, rather than the tartrazine itself.
Tartrazine was banned in Norway, Germany and Sweden until the EU over ruled the laws and made it legal to be sold in these countries again. It is currently banned in America.Yellow Food Colouring should be avoided in any product designed for any children under three or pregnant women.
