How is Microcrystalline cellulose made?

Controlled hydrolysis with dilute mineral acid solutions of a-cellulose is used to produce microcrystalline cellulose, which is obtained as a pulp from fibrous plant materials. Following hydrolysis, the hydrocellulose is purified by filtration and the aqueous product is spray dried to form dry, porous particles of a broad size distribution. This is then sieved to obtain the different grades known as MCC 101 and microcrystalline cellulose 102.
